Set up your server with Claude or ChatGPT
Connect your own AI app to Kovu and set up your server by chatting: turn modules on, write welcome messages, build channels and roles. Your app does the thinking, so Kovu adds no AI cost, and Kovu stays free during early access.
Connect your AI app
Add Kovu as a connector in Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or another MCP app and sign in with Discord.
Ask for what you want
Describe your server and the setup you’re after. The app reads your server through Kovu and plans the changes.
Review, then apply
Every change comes back as a preview. Nothing happens until you say yes, and you can undo it afterwards.
Before you start
- Kovu is in your server, and you can manage it on kovu.gg: you’re the owner, have Administrator or Manage Server, or hold a Kovu manager role.
- Your AI app supports remote MCP servers (connectors). Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code do.
- The server allows AI apps. It’s on by default; the switch is in Bot Settings → AI assistants and API.
Connect your AI app
Kovu’s MCP server URL
https://kovu.gg/mcpclaude.ai, Claude Desktop and the Claude mobile apps.
- In Claude, open Settings → Connectors and choose Add custom connector.
- Name it Kovu and paste
https://kovu.gg/mcpas the URL, then choose Add. - Choose Connect. Sign in with Discord, check what Claude may do, then choose Allow.
- In a chat, turn Kovu on from the tools menu and ask away.
On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner may need to add the connector for the organization first.
When you sign in, Kovu asks what the app may do. Pick only what you need; you can disconnect it anytime on Developer & AI.
What it can and can’t do
You choose from
- See your serversServers you manage, Kovu modules and settings, channels, roles and the change log.
- Change Kovu settingsModule settings, modules on or off, and lists like custom commands and tags.
- Change Discord server setupChannels, roles, permissions and server settings, within your own permissions.
- Post panelsReaction role, ticket, verification and form panels in your channels.
It never can
- Ban, kick, time out or warn anyone
- Read messages or DMs
- Change custom bot tokens
- See servers you don’t manage, or other servers’ data
- Turn a server’s AI and API access back on
How changes work
Preview first. When you ask for a change, the app gets a preview from Kovu: every setting, channel or role it would touch, before and after. It should show it to you and wait for your yes before applying it. Previews expire after 15 minutes.
Warnings for risky changes. Deleting channels or roles, changing what @everyone can do, and anything involving Administrator or other dangerous permissions come with a warning.
Your permissions, not more. The app can’t give a role permissions you don’t have, or touch roles above yours or Kovu’s. The same guardrails as the dashboard apply. Changing channels, roles or server settings needs the matching Discord permission (Manage Channels, Manage Roles or Manage Server); a Kovu manager role alone isn’t enough.
Everything is logged. Changes show in the server’s dashboard log with a “via MCP” or “via API key” badge, and in Discord’s audit log as “your name via Kovu MCP”. Ask the app to undo its last changes, or revert them yourself in the dashboard log. List items (commands, tags, panels…) can be undone for a day; channel moves can’t be undone automatically.
Things to ask
Look at my server and tell me which Kovu modules I should turn on for a 500-member gaming community.
Set up a welcome message in #welcome that mentions the new member and points them to #rules.
Turn on levels with a level-up message in #bot-commands, and give the Regular role at level 10.
Add custom commands for !rules and !apply that answer with short embeds.
Make a Staff category with private #mod-chat and #mod-log channels only moderators can see.
What changed in my server through Kovu this week? Undo the last change you made.
Stuck for ideas? Ask the app to use Kovu’s plan_server_setup prompt: it walks through a sensible setup for your kind of community.
Security and privacy
- The app acts as you. Kovu re-checks with Discord on every call that you can still manage the server: losing access stops changes at once (reading can lag up to a minute).
- When you connect an app, Kovu pre-ticks only reading and module settings. Changing channels, roles and permissions, and posting panels, are yours to tick.
- The server’s owner, admins and members with Manage Server can switch AI and API access off for their server. AI apps can’t switch it back on.
- Sign-in uses OAuth with Discord: the app never sees your Discord password or token. Kovu stores API keys only as hashes.
- What the app reads through Kovu (settings, channel and role names) goes to your AI provider under their terms. Kovu never reads message content for it.
- Disconnect apps and revoke keys anytime on Developer & AI. They stop working right away.
Scripts and the REST API
Everything the AI app can do is also a REST endpoint at https://kovu.gg/api/v1, with a personal API key. Keys have their own permissions, server list and expiry. Apps that can’t sign in with OAuth can use a key too.
Troubleshooting
- “AI and API access is off for this server”
- Someone turned it off in Bot Settings → AI assistants and API. The owner, an admin or someone with Manage Server can turn it back on.
- “Kovu isn’t in this server”
- Add Kovu first. The AI app can only set up servers Kovu is in.
- “You can’t manage this server”
- You need to be the owner, have Administrator or Manage Server, or hold a Kovu manager role. Kovu checks this with Discord on every call, so a removed role takes effect right away.
- The change expired or changed since the preview
- Previews last 15 minutes and are refused if the settings changed in the meantime. Ask the app to propose the change again.
- The app doesn’t see Kovu’s tools
- Check that the connector is turned on in the chat. If you approved only “See your servers”, the app can look but not change anything: disconnect it on Developer & AI and connect again with more permissions.
- “Too many requests”
- Each account can make 120 calls and 30 changes a minute. Wait a minute, then continue.
